Federation Bungalow

No. 15 Parker Street, Ferniehurst, is a single-storey house constructed in limestone, brick and rendered brick, with a hipped and gabled, tiled roof. It is an excellent example of a residence in the Federation Bungalow style constructed in the Inter-War period. The place has a generously proportioned plan with a wide entrance corridor, generous vestibule and four very fine and intact front rooms. The other original rooms are well proportioned but are less finely detailed and have been modified in a variety of ways over time. Ferniehurst features fine plaster detailing to arches, cornices, and ceiling roses, a variety of fireplaces and surrounds, and original faux bois internal joinery. The interior finishes contribute to the fine aesthetic qualities of the place. They have generally been painted a small number of times so that the detailing retains its original sharp lines. The exterior surfaces have been maintained in original condition and retain their authentic visual qualities. The front elevation is symmetrically planned with a full-width, return, hipped-roof verandah. The verandah is supported on timber posts with brackets. A gable is located centrally in the verandah and marks the entry. The entry door and hopper light are flanked by sidelights and sets of double hung sash windows. The roofscape features rendered chimneys and finials. The place sits on limestone foundations and the walls are face brick with string courses and sill dressings.

The place retains its form and most of its details and plays an important role in the pattern of development of a middle-class suburb.

HISTORY

The Boat Builders House, now the Left Bank

Thomas and Fanny Carroll purchased the land in 1889 and from there ran a boat building business. Thomas William Whiteley, built the home as well as other historical buildings in Fremantle – the house became colloquially known as ‘The Boat Builder’s House’.

In 1940, Alan Harry Sargent and his sister Dorrie purchased the house from the Carroll family. Dorrie Sergeant later married newspaper editor Ted Driver and they took up residence in the stately Federation home.

Ownership went to the Metropolitan Regional Planning Authority in the 1970’s for $104,000 to make way for changes to Riverside Road. Local residents considered ‘The Boat Builder’s House’ an important landmark in the area. The East Fremantle Town Council submitted petitions to the MRPA to lease the old building which, by now, had fallen into a sad state of neglect.

The East Fremantle Town Council took over the property and in 1981 called for tenders for the restoration of the home, for use by the public. Clough Engineering Group were successful with a proposed Bar, Cafe and Restaurant. The Left Bank Bar, Cafe and Restaurant opened in 1990.

HISTORY

1927 A Famous Sweet.—Take as many freestone peaches as there are guests to be served. Dip them in boiling water until the skins slip off easily; then poach or simmer them gently in sugar syrup, flavored with vanilla. Be very sure that the syrup does not actually boil. When the peaches are tender, but still unbroken, remove them from the fire, and let them cool in the syrup. Only a few minutes are necessary to cook them, if the peaches are as ripe as they should be. Serve every peach on a mound of vanilla ice cream, placed in a compost or on a glass dish, and mash the whole with a puree of fresh raspberries made by straining through a fine sieve some very ripe fruit; add to the juice equal quantity of fine confectioner's sugar. Keep in the refrigerator until needed.—Mrs. R. Simpson, 33 Preston Point-road, East Fremantle. (reference

1927 Casserole of Rabbit.—Take one rabbit, one small onion, bunch of herbs or less, half pint stock or water, one small stick of celery, half tablespoonful flour, one teaspoonful salt, pepper, dripping, two slices of bacon. Wash dry and joint rabbit, dip in seasoned peel and very thinly sliced onion, heat dripping in frying pan, brown rabbit, sprigs of parsley, bay leaf, and celery. Cut into one inch lengths, add stock or water, cover with lid. Cook in oven ½  to two hours; frying may be omitted if liked, and other vegetables substituted for celery. Steak and chops are delicious cooked in this way.—Mrs. R Simpson, 33 Preston Point-road, East Fremantle. (reference
