Single storey brick and tile residence in the Federation Bungalow style

No 11 Dalgety Street, now called Moorefield, is a fine expression of the Federation Bungalow style. It was originally 215 Canning Highway, which is why it faces north, and built as Karitane. The front elevation is asymmetrically planned with a thrust bay and a full width return hip roofed verandah. In its original form, the elevation was symmetrical, but additions to the south changed this. The current roof is a replacement for the original. The central thrust bay features a gable over a bay window.

At some point the site was subdivided, with the creation of a lot on Canning Highway and, in the late twentieth century, a further one on Dalgety Street. Two new houses are located either side as a result, and the front entrance is from what is now the side of the house. Additions were made to the south and east of the house.

HISTORY

1937 Coming-of-Age Party. To celebrate the coming-of-age of their daughter Elsie, Mr. and Mrs. W. J. Truscott, of Dalgety-street, East Fremantle, entertained a number of their friends at the Masonic Hall, East Fremantle last Tuesday evening. The guests enjoyed games and dancing to a late hour. Mrs. Truscott chose a gown of grey crepe de chine and lace whilst Miss. Elsie Truscott wore a frock of floral crepe de chine. (reference)

1938 Truscott Seeks New Role W. J. ("Nipper") Truscott, one of the outstanding football identities of all time, is a candidate for the secretaryship of the South Fremantle Club. Since his brilliant playing career ended Mr. Truscott has been prominent as a State selector. Although Mr. Truscott was already a champion on the goldfields it was with the East Fremantle Club that he achieved his greatest feats, among them representing W.A. in five carnivals. He is the only player with that distinction. It is a coincidence that his nephew, one of South's most brilliant players, transferred to that club from East Fremantle. A last-minute effort was made to persuade the retiring secretary Mr. P. C. Winch to reconsider his decision, and Mr. Truscott and Mr. Harrison would have withdrawn had he done so. There will also be an election for the committee. The ballot, in which keen interest will be taken, will be open at the shop of Mr. F. Yench, in High-street, from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. on Monday and in the clubrooms prior to the meeting that night. (reference)

1943 Challenges Football Record. Mr. W. J. ("Nipper") Truscott, of East Fremantle, W.A., claims he has a much better football record than that of Mr. Ernie Beller, of Coogee. Mr. Beller recently claimed an all-code Australian record. He has played 358 first-grade matches. Mr. Truscott has written stating that he appeared in 474 first-grade Australian Rules games. This includes 420 games in the Western Australian League and 32 inter-state games. He is the only player who has played football in five interstate carnivals. Mr. Truscott was also an interstate cricketer, retiring at the age of 52 He is now 57. (reference)

1945 Football Record-Holder Now Plays Bowls. Football records of Frank Jenkins who played his 100th game with South Fremantle last Saturday, Doug Oliphant (205 games) and Ted Tyson (226 games) and still playing with Perth and West Perth respectively, pale into insignificance when compared with the record of W. J. ("Nipper") Truscott. Fifty-nine and a postal assistant at Fremantle, “Nipper's” only sporting activity now is bowls, but behind him is a record of 21 seasons of first-class football. He played in nearly 500 games. From 1907 to 1912 at a time when goldfields football challenged in quality and importance the football on the coast, he played just over 100 games with Mines Rover. In 1913 he commenced with East Fremantle and retired in 1927 at the age of 41. In those 15 years he played more than 300 games not including between 20 and 30 semi-finals and finals. He figured in twelve interstate club games and created an Australian record by appealing in five carnivals (22 matches). When he captained a W.A. side in 1921 this State won. "Nipper" Truscott played cricket even longer than football, retiring at 52. He was an all-rounder, made two centuries on the goldfields, moderate scores on the coast, and secured wickets, with his right-hand slows. His son, now in the Army and named "Nipper" after his father, played football for some seasons, and was in the 1937 carnival side. (reference)

1946 'Nipper' Truscott Retires Today- Former champion League footballer W. J. ("Nipper") Truscott retired from the P.M.G. Department today and with his wife will leave on a holiday trip to the Eastern States next week. He had served with the department for 46 years, the last 23 at Fremantle. Mr. Truscott was attached to the registration section of the Postal Department at Fremantle and was today farewelled by the staff, who made him a presentation. Transferred from the Goldfields in 1912, Mr.  Truscott was unable to play with East Fremantle that season as his clearance had not come through, but he toured and played with Old Easts in the Eastern States that year. In 1913 he started his successful career with East Fremantle, a career which climaxed with his selection as captain of the West Australian eighteen which won the Australian football carnival in Perth in 1921. (reference)

1953 Western Australian visitor to Adelaide during the carnival in July may be W. J. ("Nipper") Truscott, former WA State and carnival star. Mr. L. Phillips, of Westbourne Park, has just returned from a visit to Perth bearing Truscott's regards to all old friends including Billy Mayman, who was a team mate of Truscott's in the Mines Rovers club on the gold fields in the early 1900's. "Nipper," who played in five carnivals, claims Marjorie Jackson's home town (Lithgow) as his birthplace and retired from league football in 1927 when 41 after 15 years with East Fremantle. During that time he was never out of the State side. (reference)

18 Dalgety Street-woodside

18 Dalgety Street (map)

ARCHITECTURE

Woodside, originally an imposing Federation Free Classical style single and two-storey brick and rendered house, was converted into a maternity hospital. The place addresses Dalgety Street on the west, Fortescue Street on the east and is screened from Canning Highway.
Some important trees remain in the grounds including mature olives most likely to have originated from Moore's plantings.
The building includes an extension to the east which contained nursing facilities, the administration and staff facilities.
The rendered modeling of the brick facade remains intact with cast iron balustrading on the upper floor and granolithic-topped concrete verandahs on both levels. Some of the cast iron is marked 'Bloggs and Bloggs'.

HISTORY

The hospital was built in 1902 as a family home by William Dalgety Moore (1834-1910) – best known for founding the company W.D. Moore and Co, from which well-known businesses Dalgety’s and Moore’s grew. Woodside was purchased by Dr Edwin East in 1926 and used as a private hospital.

“The East Fremantle Police were notified on Tuesday last that a little boy named Richard Meredith (51/2) had been knocked down and dragged about 20 yards by a motor cycle ridden by William Finnigan. He was taken to Woodside private hospital suffering from severe injuries to the shoulders, concussion, and a compound fracture of the right hand.” Sunday Times, 14 February 1926, page 5

During World War II it Woodside was converted to flats. The State Government bought it after the War and it was opened as a Woodside Maternity Hospital in 1954. Matron Leggett was the first Matron. Wards and wings were added to the original house at this time and a new theatre and birthing suites were added in 1966. The State Heritage register notes that the hospital was established to meet the demands of the local community, and went on to be a leader in the evolution of modern maternity practice in Western Australia, including the introduction of home-birthing and post-natal support services.

First Baby At New Hospital. Only a few hours after the new Woodside Maternity Hospital, in Dalgety-street, East Fremantle, was opened on Tuesday, the first baby was born there. The picture shows the baby, Russell David Boyes in the arms of his proud mother, Mrs. E. T. Boyes, of Rockingham Road, Kwinana. A nurse said that Russell was born "while we were still making up the beds." (reference)

There is an oral history interview in the Fremantle City Library History Centre - with Mary Cameron (the last Matron at Woodside) and interviewer Margaret McPherson, about the nursing history at Woodside Hospital and also a collection of photos of the Moore family that Ms Cameron collected.

In 1985, Woodside Maternity Hospital was incorporated into Fremantle Hospital and Health Service (FHHS). In 2006, services transferred from that hospital to the Kaleeya Hospital ( closed in 2014).

The last baby born in Woodside was in 2006, after a state government decision to close the hospital and build the new Kaleeya Maternity Hospital. Health administration staff stayed on until 2015, when Woodside finally closed its doors.

In 2016 the Council amended its zoning to residential.

In 2018 - Aged-care provider Hall & Prior bought Woodside for $13 million and will spend $60 million transforming the site into a health and aged-care precinct.

HISTORY

This beautiful old house was the family home of the Bull family for 63 years and then the home of the Taggart family for the last 40 years.

James Henry Bull (1889-1978) bought the land around 1916/17 and built the house that stands there now. James was born in Bunbury (one of 9 children of William Bull and Elizabeth Gibson). He came to Fremantle in 1912, where he found work as a clerk. In 1914 he married Delores Rose (1894-1978) in Fremantle, and the couple moved to 15 Dalgety St (renumbered 30 Dalgety in 1939) where they lived for 64 years.

James and Delores had three children: Walter James Bull the eldest son was born 13 Feb 1915.  Gwendoline Rose was born 5 April 1916 and Golda Joan was born in March 1919. They were all born at 30 Dalgety St.

During WWll Walter served in the Defence Forces and the two sisters, who had trained as hairdressers used the family home to run a hairdressing and beauty salon from the front rooms on the north side of the verandah. You can read their story in the Notable and Notorious section- Gwen and Golda Bull.

James Bull died 15 June 1978 and was buried in Fremantle Cemetery. Dolores died later the same year (8 Dec 1978) aged 84. For many years James Henry Bull provided for his family by working as a brokers assistant and was well known in the local community. The property passed to Gwen Bull, who had lived in the house all her life- and who sold it on the death of both parents, in 1979- to S & N Barrett, before being sold to the present owner Joanne Taggart who has lived in the house since 1981.

The property contains some very special wooden sheds at the rear. These include an outside toilet c 1918, an outside laundry with original copper, a small outhouse room used by James Bull as his bedroom and another room which was used as a storeroom (sometimes used to hang meat that was brought up from family in the South-west and distributed amongst neighbours). It is also rumoured that there was once an air-raid shelter under the hills hoist washing line.
