ARCHITECTURE

Post War Porch House/ Bungalow with Art Deco & Modern Influences

No. 63 Fortescue Street is a single-storey house constructed in brick and rendered brick with a hipped, tiled roof. It is a simple expression of the Inter-War Bungalow style. The front elevation is asymmetrically planned with a thrust bay and a part-width, flat-roofed verandah. The verandah is supported on rendered piers with a rendered balustrade spanning between them. The verandah roof extends across the thrust bay to become a sunhood. The thrust bay features a set of casement windows and there is a central door flanked by casement windows. The lower walls are face brick and the upper walls are rendered.
The place retains its basic form and details, however, there are additions to the rear.
The place is consistent with the building pattern in the Precinct and it plays an important role in the pattern of development of a middle-class suburb.

HISTORY

Research on the history of this property is currently under way by the Museum of Perth in partnership with the Town of East Fremantle.

Gable Cottage with Regency Influences

No. 63 (previously was no. 129) Sewell street is a single story house constructed in rendered brick with a gable corrugated iron roof. It is a fine expression of the Federation Bungalow style. The front elevation is asymmetrically planned with a gable thrust bay and a full-width skillion roofed verandah. The verandah is supported timber posts over a timber floor. The gable bay features decorative barges and double hung sash windows. There is a central door and hopper lights flanked by sidelights and a window. The window is a double hung sash window flanked by sidelights.

Federation / Domestic Carpenter w Georgian Influences

No. 63 (previously was no. 125) King Street is single storey cottage of timber framing and jarrah weatherboard cladding with a hipped corrugated iron roof. It is a simple expression of the Federation Bungalow style with later modifications. The front elevation is symmetrically planned with a central door and hopper light flanked by double hung sash windows. The facade features a full width bullnosed verandah supported on timber posts over a timber floor. A St Andrew’s cross balustrade spans between the timber posts.

1932 The funeral of the late Mr. Horace Brown (Jack), late of 125 King-street, East Fremantle took place at the Church of England Cemetery, Fremantle yesterday afternoon. The deceased was born at St. Albans, Hertford, England, and came to New South Wales in the barque Carlisle Castle 44 years ago. The Carlisle Castle was wrecked off Fremantle in 1900. Mr. Brown lived for about 12 years in Sydney. He arrived in Fremantle 32 years ago and had lived there ever since. He was a member of the East Fremantle Lodge No 13 I.O.O.F., and was a life member of the Fremantle Lumpers' Union. He was of quiet disposition and highly respected. (reference)

No 63 Irwin Street is a single storey house constructed in rendered brick house with a hipped and gable tiled roof. It is an expression of the Inter-War Bungalow style. The front elevation is asymmetrically planned with a thrust gable bay and a full width return hip roofed verandah. The verandah is supported on timber posts on masonry piers. The gable bay is partially clad in weatherboards and features a set of casement windows under a tiled awning. There is a central door flanked by casement windows.

No 63 Petra Street is a single storey house constructed in brick and rendered brick with a hipped and gable corrugated iron roof. It is a fine expression of the Federation Bungalow style. It is asymmetrically composed with a thrust gable bay and a full width return hip roofed verandah. The verandah is supported on turn timber posts with brackets. The north section of the return verandah has been enclosed. The half-timbered gable bay features a set of casement windows under a sunhood. There is a central door and hopper light flanked by side lights and a set of casement windows. There is a rendered string course and windows have decorative sills. The roofscape features a pair of brick chimneys.

No. 63 (previously was no. 111) Glyde street is a single storey residence constructed in limestone and brick with a hipped corrugated iron roof. It is a fine example of a Federation Bungalow style house. The front elevation is symmetrically planned with a central door and hopper light flanked by double hung sash windows. The facade features a full width bullnose roofed verandah supported on timber posts over a timber floor. A vertical timber balustrade spans between the posts. The openings have brick quoins. The house is elevated above the garden. A timber framed stair leads from the garden to the verandah.

No 63 Fraser Street is a single storey house constructed in limestone brick and rendered brick with a hipped and gable tiled roof. It is a representative expression of the Inter-War California Bungalow style. It is asymmetrically composed with a gable thrust bay and a gable roofed porch. The porch is supported on stout square columns set over limestone piers. An open pattern concrete balustrade spans between the piers. The porch roof extends over the gable bay. The gable bay features casement windows. To the west there is an integrally designed garage. The garage features a curved top parapet. The place sits on limestone foundations. The lower walls are face brick and the upper walls are rendered. The roofscape features a rendered chimney and finials.

The front facade is symmetrically planned with a full width return hipped roofed verandah. The verandah is supported on timber posts with post brackets. A half-timbered gable sits centrally above the verandah. There are central French doors across the front facade. The roofscape features brick chimneys and finials.
