ARCHITECTURE

Early Federation / Gothic w Simple Classical Influences

No. 4 (previously was no. 6) Marmion street is a single storey house constructed in rendered masonry with a hipped corrugated iron roof. It is a simple expression of the Federation Bungalow style with later modifications. The front elevation is asymmetrically planned with a full width return skillion roofed verandah. The verandah is supported on Tuscan columns set on brick piers. The verandah treatment and rendering to the walls are later modifications.

HISTORY

1920 The funeral of the late Mr. Thomas Power, of No. 10 Little Howard-street, Fremantle, who died on February 28, as a result of an accident, took place on Monday afternoon... and was largely attended. The deceased, who was in his 60th year, was born at Waterford, Ireland, and was one of the earliest pioneers on the goldfields. He leaves a widow and one son. The funeral cortege moved from the above residence, and proceeded to St. Patrick's Church, Adelaide street, Fremantle...The chief mourners were: Mrs Power (wife), Mr. William Power (son), Margaret and Eileen Power (granddaughters), James Power (grandson), Jack Dorgan (nephew). The pall-bearers were: Messrs. E. C. Mayger, president, F. Chaney, secretary, and S. Duncan (Perth and Fremantle Operative Bakers' Union) and P. J. Dunn, T. McMahon, and C. Late Victorian / Early Federation / Cottage with Queen Anne Influences & Art Deco Adaptations

No 6 Marmion Street is a single storey house constructed in timber framing, weatherboard and fibrous cement cladding with a hipped and gabled corrugated iron roof. It is a simple expression of the Federation Bungalow style. The front elevation is asymmetrically planned with a gable thrust bay and part width skillion roofed verandah. The verandah has been predominantly filled in with a weatherboard addition. The addition features three windows. The gable bay features a double hung sash window with a sunhood over it. There is a central door set back in the verandah.

No. 8 (previously was no. 12) Marmion street is a single storey house constructed in rendered masonry with a hipped tiled roof. It is most likely a Federation Bungalow with Post-World War II overlays. The front elevation is symmetrically planned with a central door in a deep recess flanked by sidelights and windows. The painted walls are a later modification.

1918 Through inadvertence the name of Master P. Carolan was omitted from the list of prize winners in connection with 'the' list of 'Oblate Fathers' scholarship prizes to the Christian Brothers' schools, Fremantle. (reference)

1925 The funeral of the late Mr. John Joseph Carolan took place on Friday last, the cortege leaving St. Patrick's Church, Fremantle and proceeding to the Roman Catholic cemetery, Fremantle, where his remains, enclosed in a polished jarrah casket, were laid to rest...The casket bearers were members of the Harbor Trust -Messrs. J. Cattanach, G. Griffiths, W. Dunning, J. Stephenson, Mr. Smith (foreman Harbor Trust). Pall bearers were Messrs. McCloskey (representing H.A.C.B.S.), J. Barry, D. James and Collins (I.N.F.), M. A tall gable extends above the verandah. The gable features a ventilation grill.

The place is a house in the Federation Bungalow style that has been modified in the Inter-War period. The original verandah has been filled in. The front elevation is asymmetrically planned with an offset door flanked by four windows. The verandah is a full width skillion roofed verandah with corrugated iron roof sheeting.

The place is a residence in the Federation Bungalow Style with later modifications. The front elevation is asymmetrically planned with an offset entry door flanked by a double hung sash window. The door is recessed in an arched entry on the west side. The facade features a full width hip roofed verandah supported on Tuscan columns mounted on masonry piers. The verandah appears to be a replacement. A parapet wall runs along the west lot boundary.

1918 Lumpers and Lash. "Dinkums" and "Gnashionalists". Jury Decide Twas a Fair Fight And Return Verdict of Acquittal...Oscar Alfred Carlson, a member of the Lumpers Union, said Wilkie was a "Bit Of A Nagger." He and Wilkie had a few words, "both swearing up a bit," and Captain Thomas told them to keep quiet. (reference)

1928 Oscar Alfred Carlson. A Fremantle wharf lumper petitioner in the Carlson divorce case. His principal grounds of divorce were that his wife came home late from dances continuously after being married to him 13 years. (reference)

1928 Wharf Lumper’s Wife Lived Her Own Life. Is Now Divorced. Lisle Carlson apparently loved her husband, Oscar Alfred Carlson, but then tired of him, with the result that the couple drifted apart and provided a case for Mr. Justice Burnside in the Divorce Court today. Carlson, a young man, said he was married to his wife at North Fremantle in 1910 and they had three children... (reference)

1939 Motorist Fined Drove 'Under Influence' Oscar Carlson (49), waterside worker, was fined and was disqualified from holding a driver's licence for 12 months, when he appeared before the Perth Police Court, on a charge he drove a motor car south along Canning highway, near Berwick street, South Perth, while he was so far under the influence of liquor as to be incapable of having proper control of the vehicle. 1930 A motor car driven by Mrs. Annie Haskell of Corrigin, with Mr. T. Haskell, her husband and Mrs. Moyes as passengers was struck by a locomotive at East Guildford railway crossing yesterday afternoon but the occupants escaped. (reference)

The front elevation is asymmetrically planned with an offset door flanked by a partly enclosed verandah. The facade features a full width bullnosed verandah supported on a Tuscan column and masonry columns. The verandah has been partly enclosed with timber lattice work. The facade is dominated by a classically derived pediment supported on rendered pilasters.

1920 GALLANT ATTEMPT AT RESCUE, ONE MAN DROWNED. Two lumpers, Robert Albert Kolby and Cambridge White, behaved very gallantly at North Fremantle on Friday evening, but unfortunately, as a result, White lost his life. Whilst on their way home from work the two men heard cries coming from the river, and found that a little girl, Alice Irene Harding, aged 10, was drowning. White im- mediately went to her assistance, and was bringing her to safety when he got into difficulties himself and sank. Kolby then rushed in and brought out the little girl. He then made desperate efforts to rescue his mate, who had gone down in 12 feet of water. With the assistance of two other men the body of White was secured, but all efforts at resuscitation failed. It is a simple expression of the Federation Bungalow style with later modifications. The front elevation is symmetrically planned with a central door flanked by windows. The facade features a full width skillion roofed verandah. The verandah spans between masonry walls and is supported on steel posts. All openings appear to be replacements. There are additions to the rear.

1931 Fire At Fremantle. Last night the Fremantle Fire Brigade was called to a four-roomed weatherboard house, occupied by Ernest Gibson, at 68 Marmion street, Fremantle. When the fire engine arrived, it was found that the dwelling was well alight and, although there was a good water pressure, the house was badly damaged and the contents totally destroyed. The building, which was owned by Mrs H. Pearse, was insured. The cause of the outbreak is unknown. Severe damage was also done to the neighbouring dwelling, occupied by Arthur Toms. (reference)

Interwar, Simple Bungalow Porch House w  Art Deco Adapt.

No 30 Marmion Street (was 72 pre 1939) is a single storey house constructed in timber framing and weatherboard cladding with a hipped tiled roof. It is an elaborate expression of an Inter-War Bungalow style with later modifications. The front elevation is asymmetrically planned with a pair of thrust bays and an addition to the east. The eastern thrust bay features a hipped verandah and a pair of double hung sash windows. The verandah is supported on Tuscan columns and brick piers. To the west of this verandah is another verandah. The western verandah is a skillion roofed verandah that wraps around the residence. The area of the verandah spanning between the two thrust bays has been filled in. The house sits on a corner lot between Marmion Street and Sewell Street. A garage to the rear of the lot addresses Sewell Street.

No. 32 (previously was no. 109) Marmion street is a single storey house constructed in timber framing and weatherboard cladding with a hipped and gable tiled roof. It is an elaborate expression of an Inter-War Bungalow style with later modifications. The front elevation is asymmetrically planned with a gable thrust bay and gable porch. The gable thrust bay features a full width skillion roofed awning and casement windows. The gable porch is supported on Tuscan columns on masonry piers. The roofscape features another gable roof set deeper in the lot.

No. 116 (previously was no. 185) Marmion street is a single storey rendered brick house with a hipped and gabled tiled roof. It is an expression of the Inter-War Porch style. The front elevation is asymmetrically planned with a gable bay and a part width skillion roofed verandah. The verandah roof extends over the gable bay and is supported on stout piers. The gable bay features a bay window. There is a central door flanked by sets of casement windows. 

HISTORY

1935 One of the pioneers of Western Australia, in the person of Mrs. Margaret Rooke, was laid to rest in the Anglican portion of the Fremantle Cemetery on February 22. Born in Perth 75 years ago, the late Mrs. Rooke had been a resident of this State ever since...Mrs. Rooke was a member of the Fremantle Labour Women's League, but owing to indifferent health had to refrain from taking an active part in the functions of the league during the past few years. Her late husband, Claude M. Rooke, late blacksmith of East Fremantle and Tenterden, predeceased her 25 years ago. The chief mourners were: George and Ernest Gibson and Christopher Rooke (sons) Gertrude (Mrs. C. Curness) and Hilda (Mrs. O James), daughters; Mrs. M. Jackman, Mrs. T. Johns, Mrs. E. Smith and Mrs. A. Eagen (sisters) and numerous nephews, nieces and grandchildren. The pall-bearers were Messrs. W. Carmody (president of Fremantle Tramways Union). F. Jones (Tramway Car Barn). R. Hunter (North East Fremantle R.S.L.)...Among those present at the graveside were Mrs. Beasley (Fremantle Labour Women's Organisation). (reference)

No. 118 (previously was no. 187) Marmion street is a single storey house constructed in brick and rendered brick with a hipped tiled roof. It is an expression of the Inter-War Porch style. The front elevation is asymmetrically planned with a thrust bay and a part width skillion roofed porch. The porch is supported stout piers. A masonry balustrade spans between the piers. The thrust bay features a bay window with casement windows. There is a central door flanked by a set of casement windows. The windows are double hung sashes with multi panes in the top sashes. The roofscape features a rendered chimney and finials. The lower walls are face brick and upper walls are rendered.

The front facade features casement windows.

HISTORY

1925 Assault. Percy Russell was fined £1 with £3 2s 6d costs at the Fremantle Police Court yesterday for having on August 8 assaulted Cecil Ivan Jarvis, a tram conductor. Mr. L. Coleman prosecuted on behalf of the Fremantle Tramway Board. (reference)

1938 Assaults Tram Conductor. For having assaulted a tram conductor Edward George Taylor, a young man, was fined £3 with £3 7s costs in Fremantle Police Court today. Taylor admitted a charge of having assaulted Cecil Ivan Jarvis. Mr. F. G. Unmack, who prosecuted on behalf of the Tramway Board, said that about 7.45 p.m. on February 19 Taylor boarded an East Fremantle tram while it was in motion. He was carrying two bottles of beer, one of which dropped and smashed.Apparently incensed at his loss, counsel said, Taylor then went into the saloon of the tram, where Jarvis was collecting fares, and struggled with him. 1941 Reported Missing. Missing Private Herbert Ernest Stratton is a nephew of W. A. Trotting Association President J, Stratton. Private Stratton has a younger brother and three cousins in the A.I.F. in Australia waiting to go overseas. For six months before enlisting in the A.I.F. Private Stratton was a member of the militia forces, became known as a crack rifle shot. His father, Mr. H. E. Stratton of Palmyra, served with the 28th Battalion in the last War. (reference) 1942 Missing since the Battle for Crete, assumed by the military authorities to be dead, Private Herbert Ernest Stratton' has turned up in a prison camp in Crete. He was captured during the fighting for the island. (reference)

1919 Wedding on July 19, at the Methodist Church, Fremantle, by the Rev. Wesley Wellington, Percival Osborne Rosewarne (late 11th Battalion, and Boulder), eldest son of Mr. and Mrs. Rosewarne, Kadina, South Australia, to Clara, second daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Gunson, of Hazeldene, Holland-street, Fremantle. 1925 Mr. George Dymock, formerly chief warder of the Fremantle Gaol, passed away on the 20th instant, in the Fremantle Hospital, at the age of 71 years. The deceased, who was born in London, Eng., had resided in this State for the last 38 years. Since his retirement from the Prison Department, Mr, Dymock, in spite of his age, had been able to follow his former trade as a plasterer. He was well known in the Fremantle district, and was highly respected. Richmond Lodge No. 33, W.A.C., claimed him as an active member. The chief mourners were: Mrs. Mary Ann Dymock (wife), Messrs. Charles, Ernest, George and Albert Dymock (sons). Mesdames S. Miller, W. Schroeder, and H. Deatta (daughters), The superintendent of the gaol was represented bv Chief Warder Proud. (reference)

The front facade is symmetrically planned with a central door flanked by a polygonal bay window and a double hung sash window. A particular feature of the house is its boarded gable and lattice vent at the top of the gable. The east elevation features sets of double hung sash windows.

HISTORY

1910 On board the Penguin are two of the late Pericles crew, they are R.W. Richards, who was a cook on the ill-fated boat, and Arthur Jeapes, a steward. They are both acting in these capacities on the Penguin and take their lot philosophically, although they have lost their all... (reference)

It is an expression of the Inter-War Porch style. The place has been extensively modified. The front elevation is asymmetrically planned with a thrust gable bay and a series of verandahs. The verandahs are both hipped and skillion roofed. There is a central door flanked by sidelights and double hung sash windows. A series of gables run across the front facade.

HISTORY

1925 Disorderly. Charged in Fremantle Court with having been disorderly by creating a disturbance, Robert Edward Jones was fined £3 and costs. On a second charge, of having pointed a revolver, he was fined £2. (reference)

1930 Robert Edward Jones pleaded guilty to a charge of driving a motor car in a negligent manner in Quarry Street Fremantle, on January 30, when he was brought before magistrate Geary and Mr. Frank Rowe, J.P., on Tuesday last, at the Fremantle police court. (reference)

1919 Mr. Ralph Hunter, tram chauffeur, is "twenty-one to-day." Last night a host of his friends who believe in grabbing Time by the beer lock forgathered at the Burlington Private Hostel in Packenham street, where Ralph hangs out, and gave him an excessive-speed time. Mr. Jim Johnson, of Harbor Trust engineering fame, was same age a few days ago, and his friends coalesced with those of Ralph, and made last night's celebrations a double event. Toasts, speeches, songs, recitations, and Instrumental items followed each other like nags chasing the Melbourne mug. During the evening Mr Hunter, who before he took on tram-steering was skating instructor at the Olympia Skating Rink, gave an exhibition with chalked rollers on the balcony, performing the difficult feat writing the names, ages, and birthday dates of himself and Mr. Johnson on the boards. "Won' g'home morning," "Oul Lang Shine," "Jolly goo'f'lers," add "Shave the King" concluded a very happy evening. (reference)

April 1919 Fremantle Effort. In connection with the Fremantle portion of the (Returned Services Alliance) R.S.A. appeal the public are taking very great interest in the "most popular tramway conductor competition." A large voting board has been placed outside the Town Hall. Mr. J. Willis has asked of those competing to send in their progressive reports to Miss Glasson, East Fremantle, to enable the votes to be placed on record. He is another returned soldier who saw some queer sights and had some pleasant and unpleasant experiences over in France. Him, I know pretty well and when any information is desired on my part he is the man I go to. Ralph can give you the history of Fremantle as well as anybody it has been my lot to meet. 1919 Divorce. Not A Dinkum Doreen. On Wednesday morning the Chief Justice sat to deal with two divorce petitions. The first was one in which a returned soldier was again an aggrieved party. John Hudson Storer was the petitioner. and he charged his wife, Doreen Amor Storer, with adultery with Thomas Stock, a tramway employee...Mr. W. E. B. Solomon appeared for the petitioner. The latter said he was married to the respondent at East Fremantle on October 9, 1916, and he left on active service on November 9, 1916. There was no issue of the marriage. Keeping up the run of nines, the petitioner returned to W.A. on July 9, 1919, by the "Somali," While he was away he received certain information regarding the behaviour of the respondent, and later he received letters from her. In one of the letters, dated January 15, 1918, the respondent said, "I am just scribbling these few lines, but I don't know if you will answer or not. I expect you have had a terrible letter from your mother and your sister. You will know the great bust-up has come at last, and I am turned out. I do not expect any more pay from you after you get mum's letter. Don't worry for me; I shall be alright... (reference)

1928. Death. Mr. Edmond Huxham Born at Launceston, England; 71 years ago, the late Mr. Edmond Huxham, arrived in South Australia, in 1879...He was attracted by the prospects of gold in Western Australia, and arrived here 36 years ago. He proceeded by rail to the terminus, viz., Southern Cross, and walked the remainder of the distance to Kalgoorlie. Mr. Huxham engaged in prospecting for some years, and later he became shift boss in the Lake View mine...The deceased came to Fremantle l4 years ago, and had been connected with the Castlemaine Brewery ever since, until his retirement owing to ill-health seven months ago... He was a just and upright man and held the respect of a large circle of friends. Two daughters and 13 grandchildren survive him. The funeral cortege moved from the residence of his son-in-law, Mr. W. J. Truscott, 57 King-street, East Fremantle...The chief mourners were Mesdames J. Clarke and W. J. Truscott (daughters) ...Maud Truscott and Gladys Huxham (granddaughters) (reference)

They made a charming picture as they walked the length of the ballroom to where Sir James and Lady Mitchell received them in front of the stage.
