ARCHITECTURE

No 252 Canning Highway is a single storey house constructed in limestone, brick and rendered brick with a hipped and gable corrugated iron roof. It is a very fine expression of the Federation Bungalow style. The front elevation is symmetrically planned with a full width return hip roofed verandah. The verandah is supported on timber posts with post brackets. A vertical timber balustrade spans between the posts. A broad set of stairs descend to the garden from the verandah. There is a central door and hopper light flanked by sidelights and casement windows. Half-timbered gables sit over the windows. There is a render string course and windows have decorative sills. The roofscape features several render capped chimneys. The place sits on limestone foundations.

1920 Death on February 6, at his late residence, Canning-road, East Fremantle, Edward Hodgson, dearly beloved husband of Ann Hodgson, and father of Elsie Adelaide and Harry Stanley Hodgson; aged 67 years. (reference)

Inter-War Free Classical

No 256 Canning Highway is a single-storey shop and attached house constructed in limestone, painted brick and rendered brick with a hipped and gable corrugated iron roof. It is a representative expression of the Inter-War Free Classical style. The place sits on a corner lot that addresses both Canning Highway and Petra Street. The styling of the shop is stripped back to the essential pier and panel parapet treatments. There is a corner entry and this is flanked by two windows on Canning Highway and a single window on Petra Street. A hip roofed awning follows the line of the building. The awning is supported on timber posts. Walls are rendered. The house can be entered through the shop or from the rear. The place sits on limestone foundations. Lower walls are painted brick and the upper walls are rendered. The windows are sets of casements with iron grilles.

Leeuwin Barracks Drill Hall

ARCHITECTURE

The Drill Hall is part of a 14 hectare Defence site located within an established residential area on the southern bank of the Swan River in East Fremantle. Other buildings on the site include an Administration Building, Education Block, Accommodation Blocks, Medical Centre, Swimming Polls and Sports Grounds.

The Drill Hall is two-storey building constructed in brick, with a terracotta tiled roof with a small high level window let into the middle of the roof on either side. The nomination also includes the Junior Recruit Memorial and flag mast to the western elevation but does not include the Parade Ground.

Stirling Bridge / Landscaping

ARCHITECTURE

The bridge has a precast segmental twin prestressed concrete box super structure supported on concrete filled driven steel piles. The bridge is 65m long, costing $2.5 million and was completed in 1974.

This elegant bridge forms part of the Fremantle eastern bypass and is a beautiful landmark nestling unobtrusively in the environment.
