ARCHITECTURE

Inter-War Free Classical

No 256 Canning Highway is a single-storey shop and attached house constructed in limestone, painted brick and rendered brick with a hipped and gable corrugated iron roof. It is a representative expression of the Inter-War Free Classical style. The place sits on a corner lot that addresses both Canning Highway and Petra Street. The styling of the shop is stripped back to the essential pier and panel parapet treatments. There is a corner entry and this is flanked by two windows on Canning Highway and a single window on Petra Street. A hip roofed awning follows the line of the building. The awning is supported on timber posts. Walls are rendered. The house can be entered through the shop or from the rear. The place sits on limestone foundations. Lower walls are painted brick and the upper walls are rendered. The windows are sets of casements with iron grilles.
