ARCHITECTURE

Stone Section: Victorian Georgian - Corner Section: Federation Free Classical

48 George Street is a single storey shop (built 1905) that was constructed in two phases. It is constructed of limestone and brick on the west side and rendered masonry on the east side. The roofs are mainly skillion with one located behind a masonry parapet wall. A 'M' format roof addresses a section of George Street. All openings have brick quoins. The verandah wraps around the corner and spans a portion of the George Street facade. Above the verandah there are panelled parapets with a pediment on the corner. The parapet is divided in plan by piers and in recent times Cornucopia urns have been added to these piers.

HISTORY

1898 Matilda Drummond was a resourceful and enterprising woman. She started her own store at 44 Hubble St in 1898, took on a partner George LACEY in 1901, and then, after his death in 1909, moved to this corner store at 48 George Street (diagonally across the road) before retiring in 1919, handing on the business to her nephew Alfred James Marie. ARCHITECTURE

Italianate

Hepburn”, No. 48 (previously was no. 92) King Street is a set of four terrace houses constructed in limestone and brickwork with rendered Italianate features- elaborate frontages to simple working class houses.. Four single-storey terraced houses of brick construction with rendered frontages and low pitched, skillion, corrugated iron roofs have recessed frontages enclosed by a timber picket fence. The roof line is concealed by a highly ornate parapet that includes the names of the four terraces - Hepburn, Glenlyon, Kyneton & Daylesford.

Each house is asymmetrically planned with an offset door flanked by a window. The entry doors have a hopper light and side lights. The window is a single pane double hung sash with sidelights. All openings have brick quoins. The houses are articulated with dividing party walls and tall pediments.

The place is consistent with the pattern of development in Plympton and plays an important role in the pattern of development of a working class suburb.

Federation, Domestic Carpenter w Regency Influences

No. 48 (previously was no. 108) Sewell street is a single story cottage constructed in timber framing and weatherboard cladding with a hipped and gable corrugated iron roof. A small gable is situated over the entry. It is a simple expression of the Federation Bungalow style with some modifications. The front elevation is symmetrically planned with a central door flanked by a sidelight and double hung sash windows. The facade features full width skillion roofed verandah supported on stop chamfered timber posts set over a concrete floor. The verandah, front door and windows appear to be replacements.

1935 Funeral. The late Mr. Leslie Gregory Smith, storekeeper, of George-street, East Fremantle, and of Fairholme, 108 Sewell-street, East Fremantle, died… Mr. Smith was born at Goornong, Victoria, and came to this State 82 years ago. He was with Currie and Murray, of North Fremantle, for a short period, and later, in partnership with Mr. A. E. Stephenson, established the business of Stephenson and Smith in George-street, East Fremantle. This business he afterwards took over on his own account, and at the time of his death had conducted it for about 29 years. Mr. Smith was a keen Freemason. He was initiated in the Loyal Westralian Lodge No. 18, W.A.C., in 1907, and occupied the chair of W.M. in 1920, retaining his membership until the time of his death...He leaves a widow, one son, and one daughter to mourn their loss. Federation / Georgian with Arts & Crafts Influences

No. 48 (previously was no. 74) East street is a single storey house constructed in brick with a hipped corrugated iron roof. It is a simple expression of the Federation Bungalow style. The front elevation is asymmetrically planned with a gabled thrust bay on the south side and a part width skillion roofed verandah on the north side. The thrust bay is complete with paired windows and a sunhood and a part timbered gable. The verandah is supported on timber posts.

No. 48 (previously was no. 90) Glyde street is a single story residence constructed in limestone and brick with a hipped ‘M’ format corrugated iron roof. It is a fine example of a Federation Bungalow style house. The front elevation is symmetrically planned with a central door flanked by double hung sash windows. The facade features a full width bullnose roofed verandah supported on timber posts. The openings are surrounded with brick quoins. 

HISTORY

1904 Fremantle Tramways And Electric Lighting. Election Of The Board. Another page in the history of the Fremantle Municipal Tramway and Electric Lighting Scheme will he recorded today, when the first Board of Management is elected by the ratepayers. It is provided in the Fremantle Tramways and Electric Lighting Act that the Board shall consist of five members, the Mayor for the time being of Fremantle being a member ex officio, while the four other members are to be elected by the rate payers, who, for the purposes of the election, have been divided into two sections-property owners and occupiers. Keen interest has been manifested in the present election, and most of the candidates for office on the Board have conducted vigorous campaigns. The Political Labour Party have entered into the contest, and they are running candidates for each of the seats. There is no lack of aspirants for the four vacancies, there being no less than seventeen candidates nominated: Occupiers' Seat... Walter Francis Wood, East Fremantle.
