1923 Walnut Dainties

Won first place in The Mirror Recipe Contest (reference)

Ingredients:

Short pastry

  • 1 oz (30 g) castor sugar

  • 1 oz (30 g) butter

  • 1 small egg

  • a few drops of flavoring

  • 1 ½ oz (45 g) dried walnuts

Method:

  1. Chop the walnuts in small pieces

  2. Beat the butter and sugar to a cream then add walnuts and flavoring and stir well

  3. Beat the egg and add sufficient of it to the butter mixture to form a stiff paste

  4. Line some patty tins with short pastry and half fill them with walnut mixture

  5. Bake in moderate oven for 15 minutes

  6. Sprinkle cakes with icing sugar and press half a walnut in each
