ARCHITECTURE

Aesthetic & Representative

No. 68 Allen Street is a single storey house constructed in painted brick and rendered bands with a hipped and gabled tiled roof. It is a fine expression of the Federation Bungalow style. The front elevation is asymmetrically planned with thrust gable bay and a full width return hip roofed verandah. The verandah is set on timber posts. An elaborate wrought iron balustrade spans between the posts. The thrust bay features a set of three casement windows. There is a central door and hopper light flanked by sidelights and a set of three casement windows. A set of concrete stairs leads from the verandah to the garden. The roofscape features a pair of chimneys.

HISTORY

1927 Death on December 24, at his residence, Stirling, 68 Allen-street, East Fremantle, William Whidby, beloved husband of Florence Ethel and fond father of Allen, late of Goode, Durrant and Co., Stella and Beryl; passed away at the age of 57. (reference)

A Starr-Bowkett Society was a co-operative, non-profit financial institution that provided interest-free loans to its members and operated on the principle of mutual self-help. Popular in Australia from the late 19th century until the early to mid 20th century, and possibly an inspiration for modern micro-credit movements, they no longer exist.
