ARCHITECTURE

Inter-War Bungalow with Federation Influences

No 40 May Street is a single-storey house constructed in rendered brick with a hipped and gable tiled roof. It is asymmetrically composed with a thrust gable bay and a part-width hip roofed verandah. The verandah is supported on timber posts and terminates at the gabled bay. The gable bay features a set of double hung sash windows. There is a central door and hopper light flanked by sidelights and a set of double hung sash windows. The roofscape features a rendered chimney.

HISTORY

1937 Death on Saturday last of Mr. Owen Fox, of 40 May street, East Fremantle, and late manager of the local branch of Charlie Carter Ltd. The late Mr. Fox was 74 years of age and leaves a widow, two sons and one daughter to mourn his loss. (reference)

1954 Thief's Haul Is £300 In Notes. The theft of £300 in notes from a house in May-street, East Fremantle, was reported to the Fremantle C.I.B. yesterday. The money, made up of £5 and £1 notes, was taken from various rooms in the house between 7.30 a.m. and 4.15 p.m. on Tuesday. It is not yet known how entry was gained to the house, which is occupied by George Shrubsall. (reference)
