ARCHITECTURE

Late Victorian / Early Federation, Georgian Domestic Carpenter

No 94 (previously known as No 168) Hubble Street is a single-story house constructed in timber framing, rusticated and feather edged weatherboard cladding with a hipped corrugated iron roof. It is a well restored residence in the Federation Bungalow style. The place is symmetrically planned with a central door and hopper light flanked by sidelights and single pane double hung sash windows. The facade features a full-width bullnose roofed verandah supported on stop chamfered timber posts.

HISTORY

1911 Death on December 8, at 168 Hubble-street, East Fremantle, Eva Olive, the dearly-beloved wife of William James Lyon, passed away at the age of 22 years. Her end was peace. Lyon, police constable, of Fremantle, are respectfully invited to follow the remains of his late beloved wife, Eva Olive, to the place of interment, the Anglican portion of the Fremantle Cemetery. McCallum, 168 Hubble-street, East Fremantle, for Two Delicious Dishes: Forfar Bridies.—Take one pound of steak, three ounces of suet, one tablespoon minced onion, 1lb. flour, pepper and salt, water to mix… and Steak in Batter: Take 1lb. of steak, ½lb. flour, ½ teaspoon salt, 2 eggs, 1 pint milk. 1939 Accident. Attempt to Stop Bolting Horses. George Anthony Fossilo (52), driver of a two-horse lorry, sustained injuries to the pelvis when attempting to stop his bolting animals in the railway goods yards, Fremantle, yesterday. Shortly before noon, Mr. Fossilo, who resides at 94 Hubble-street, East Fremantle, and is employed by Thomas H. Smith, cartage contractor, of King-street, East Fremantle, arrived at the yards with 10 drums of tar for trucking. He had pulled up his horses in order to complete the consignment note at the checking office, and while he was inside, the animals took fright and bolted. Turning sharply past the structure, they swung round wildly towards the gateway. Mr. Fossilo dashed out to stop them, but was caught between the front of the lorry and the checking office, which was shifted from its supporting sleepers by about 12 inches...He remained conscious and in considerable pain, and soon afterwards was taken by a St. John ambulance to the Fremantle Hospital. His condition last night was reported as fairly satisfactory. (reference)

Federation / Terrace w Georgian Influences

No. 94 (previously was no. 174) King street. No. 92-94 King Street is a pair of single storey cottages constructed in timber framing and weatherboard cladding with a hipped ‘M’ format corrugated iron roof. It is a simple expression of the Federation Bungalow style applied to a modest scaled duplex. The front elevation is symmetrically planned with a full width bullnosed verandah supported on timber posts. Entry doors are equally offset from the party wall. The doors are flanked by single pane double hung sash windows. A parapet wall divides the duplex. The roofscape includes elaborately capped chimneys.

1957 Naturalisation Records for Janis Leitans (b. 1911 in Germany, occupation listed as Farmer) and his Latvian relatives George, and Leontine Leitans.
