ARCHITECTURE

Late Federation / Interwar, Bungalow w Federation Influences

No 23 Irwin Street is a single storey house constructed in rendered brick with a hipped and gable corrugated iron roof. It is a fine expression of the Inter-War Bungalow style. The front elevation is asymmetrically planned with a gabled thrust bay and a part width return broken back roofed verandah. The verandah is supported on timber posts. The gable bay features a set of casement windows under a sunhood. There is a central door and hopper light flanked by sidelights and a set of casement windows.

HISTORY

1930 Christmas Eve Fatality.—An inquest was conducted at Fremantle yesterday concerning the death of Donald Sylvester Campbell (29), poultry farmer, of Melville, who was killed on Christmas Eve on the Canning-road, when the motorcycle he was riding and a Fremantle tramcar driven by a namesake, Albert William Campbell, came into collision. The deceased man was the first to give the alarm to the police on the night of the sensational shooting at Palmyra. A verdict of accidental death was returned by the Acting Coroner (Mr. G. W. Shepherd, J.P.), who stated that no blame was attachable to anyone. (reference)
